Is your job affecting your digestion? If you’re stuck at a desk for the majority of your day, it could be.

Being sedentary for long periods of time decreases blood flow to your internal organs and places excess pressure on your digestive tract.

So you could see an increase in ailments such as heartburn, bloating or gas. And chronic illnesses, such as irritable bowel syndrome, could worsen if you’re spending too much time at your desk. Plus, it can feel uncomfortable.

You might not be able to give up your job, but there are things you can do to feel better while you work:

  1. Drink more water. Staying hydrated keeps your digestive tract moving and prevents constipation. While there’s no “right” answer, 4 to 8 glasses of water per day is recommended. Or, just try to drink whenever you’re thirsty.

  2. Eat quality foods with lots of fiber. Consuming whole, unprocessed foods and plenty of fiber will help keep your digestive tract healthy. Try to include more fruits and vegetables in your diet and keep highly processed foods to a minimum.

  3. Move around. Regular exercise can help maintain proper digestion. Taking a quick walk after lunch or adding some stretching or yoga to your daily routine could make a world of difference for your gut.

  4. Be mindful when you eat. Try to avoid rushing through your meals, as this can cause indigestion. Do your mind and body a favor: Slow down while you eat and enjoy your food.
